Red Squirrel Irish; Iora rua
Colour; Reddish brown coat usually slightly darker on the back.
Size; Adult males and females grow to about the same size (25cm), Average weight 400gms
Habitat; Nests in forest and woodland. Widespread in Ireland, mainly in the South & East.
Feeding; Very largely vegetarian, Squirrels feed on a wide selection of berries, seeds & fruit.
Mating; December to mid February/March, producing an average of 3 per litter.
Life span in the wild; 3 to 6 years, females usually having a longer life span than males.
Lore; It is said the Red Squirrel, jumping from branch to branch, kept St. Patrick company on some of his travels in Ireland.
