Red Fox Irish; Sionnach
Colour; Reddish to brown with a long bushy tail usually with a white tip.
Size; Males, known as dogs, are slightly larger (5/7KG) than the female vixens (4/6Kg).
Habitat; Associated with woodland and open countryside, but can be found in any area.
Feeding; Foxes are nocturnal carnivores, eating a wide range of food types depending on the season and their location.
Mating; December to mid February, they are largely monogamous and can live in small groups.
Life span in the wild; 4 to 6 years.
Lore; It was said that Foxes were the dogs of the Norsemen, who brought them to Ireland.
It was also thought to be unlucky to meet a fox when setting out in the morning, especially if you were a fisherman.
